Officer Friendly Rides Again

This past Sunday was my first day volunteering for my Church’s “Emergency Response Team”.  Hilarious, I’m on E.R.T. (inside jail guard joke – that’s the name of our elite fighting force).  Part of my reason for joining (other than serving the Church of course) was to meet new people and maybe make some new friends along the way.  Sue and I have been serving communion for some time now, but that is a very silent task and doesn’t lend itself to socializing.
I’ve already come to realize since emergencies will be few and far between the ERT team is really a bunch of guys to first and foremost greet the congregation warmly, and then secondly be there in case something out of the ordinary occurs.
Ironically, the theme of Church on Sunday was “Breaking up with Insecurity”.   I could not have felt anymore like the zit faced 20 year old kid that as a security guard was paid to pretend to like people and be friendly to them,
It’s sad when I think how depressed I was at how much of an underachiever I felt like.  I wasted so many years just feeling worthless and not doing anything about it.
It took sometime but I did finally shake of the willies.  I realized this is not my job.  I’m volunteering, I told myself to relax and be myself.
Well the two hours passed by relatively uneventfully, the highlight being me dropping the earpiece of the radio into the toilet (luckily freshly flushed).  When I told the wife about the toilet incident she said that I was no 007.  I told her yeah I guess I’m more the 003 and a third type agent.
